Subject: Lynwood Unified School District Community Outreach & Saturday Canvassing Event

Good morning!

As most of you know already, bringing families into their child's education is essential in improving student performance and attendance. As part of our ongoing efforts in this new year to connect with our Lynwood school community, we are requesting for all schools to begin planning and scheduling a Saturday canvassing event on each of your respective campuses in the coming months. Please identify a date on an upcoming Saturday and notify Griselda Rodriguez as soon as you have finalized a date and time to host the event.

To get us started, we have identified Washington Elementary (thank you Ms. Wilson!) to host our first canvassing event. The event will be held next Saturday, Feb. 3 from 10:00am to 12:00pm! We will have a tent, booth, live music and food available which will also provide us with an opportunity to learn from this experience for future events.

What is a Saturday Canvassing Event?

  • Going door-to-door in your respective school community to have conversations about our schools, programs, experience, etc.
  • Talking to parents and community members about school-related events or services
  • Spreading and sharing our message about resources and tools available
  • Communicating directly with families on the importance of education, literacy, technology, college, careers, etc.
  • Distributing informational flyers and interest forms about your school and our district (to be provided)

Why do we need to host a Saturday Canvassing Event?
  • Canvassing door-to-door and at local stores/high-traffic areas is an effective way to speak to our school community about student success, academics, programs, events, college, careers, attendance, etc.
  • Helps connect to our community to support our efforts to improve student attendance, enrollment, engagement, achievement with face-to-face discussions
  • Collect info on potential volunteers or business leaders that can help at your school

Who should be involved?
  • Please ask your students, parents, clubs, former alumni, teachers, staff, and district personnel to participate. We are also in the process of identifying students (age 16 or older) to spend a couple hours on a Saturday to canvass our community.

Where and when should we canvass?
  • Please identify an optimal time (10:00am - 12:00pm for example) to host your school's canvassing event.
  • Starting at your school as the staging/central location - then going door-to-door in the surrounding area
  • Provide a map of the surrounding area to help organize parents, students and other volunteers.

I also plan to reach out to each Principal individually to touch base, answer any questions, and help coordinate these events.

Thanks!
